The dining room is one of the most interactive rooms in the house. It’s where you take your guests to enjoy good food, laughter and memories. Here, your guests are treated to your favorite recipes and your finest table accessories. The only way to upstage yourself is to make sure that your dining room décor stands out in its own right. Here are a few dining room décor ideas to help you on your way to creating the best dining room for your home.

French Dining Room Décor- This décor theme emphasis curves and large furniture pieces. Paint scenic nature scenes on the furniture to be used to decorate the dining room. The more popular colors of French décor are cream, light blue and light yellow. To add a sense of luxury, incorporate accessories such as a chandelier, curtains, beautiful table linens, a painting or tapestry. If you prefer more rustic French dining room décor, accessorize with earth pottery, ceramic plates and skip the table linens.

Tuscan Dining Room Décor- Tuscan dining room décor blends the natural elements of wood, stone and iron to create a warm and welcoming décor.  Warm colors including deep reds, burnt oranges, golds, mossy greens and browns can be used in this type of decor. Tuscan dining room décor works best when two of the colors are used as the primary colors and the remaining colors are used as accents for accessories. When selecting furniture and accessories, you should aspire for a distressed and used look. To incorporate nature, add some green plants, a bowl of fruit and a floral placemat.

Modern Dining Room Décor- Modern décor is currently very trendy is all about creating clean lines. In order to create this dining room décor theme, you must get rid of all clutter and be sure to always keep the room clean. In the past, modern décor called for black and white to play the role of primary colors, however today it is very common to find splashes of bright colors such as orange and turquoise. Modern dining room décor is best accomplished by using dark woods, shiny metals and glass. Get rid of the tablecloth and simply use square or oval plates with clean cloth linen napkins.

Victorian Dining Room Décor- This dining room décor theme celebrates charm and color. Try painting the bottom third of the dining room in a pastel color. Then, you can top it off with molding and add luxurious wallpaper to the upper part of the wall. This process creates a rich blend of color and artistry. Display your china in a cabinet at the far end of the dining room and place a large mirror on one of the walls. Hanging a chandelier and a lace tablecloth enhances the beauty and luxury of this dining room décor.

Shabby Chic Dining Room Décor– To achieve this spacious décor, blend neutral colors such as whites and greens on your walls and furniture. If you like table accessories, you’re in luck. You have absolute freedom when using shabby chick dining room décor. Use an oversized tablecloth, embroidered placemats and linen napkins alongside your white china. Shabby chic dining room décor celebrates fabric and texture. However, be sure not to go overboard or else it will result in being merely shabby.

Hopefully, there’s a dining room décor idea here that will inspire you to create a dining room that you will love entertaining and making new memories in. Our greatest hope is that you’ll love your dining room décor so much that you won’t want to wait to have guests. Instead, you’ll want to spend every mealtime there. Happy decorating.

Color Connections: Opposites Attract

June 2nd, 2010 No comments »

By Linda Hunt, Creatively Yours Custom Interiors

I have just come back from a week of beach, sunshine and mini family reunions on the Gulf Coast of Alabama. We are a group with personalities and quirks that blend together very well. From the oldest to the youngest there is 13 years age difference.  It always ensures a good time will be had by all.  Different colors also work well together to create a good color scheme for your home. Let “different” work magic for you.

We all know that opposites attract. We like to spend time with people who are different from us because they add a dimension to our lives we often need. I think it was Emily Post that recommended inviting a diverse group to your dinner party to ensure lots of lively and interesting table talk.  In a similar way, opposite colors on the color wheel serve to benefit one another by bringing a sense of depth and harmony to the rooms that they grace. Variety is the spice of life and the spirit of your home’s décor. In art class they teach you that you can give depth and shape to your painting by using complementary color for shading. On the green leaves of a flower, red is the best color to use for shading and adding character.

Complementary colors are those that are directly opposite from each other on the color wheel. For example, blue and orange are complementary colors, as are red and green. Complements make up very pleasing room design because the colors offer maximum contrast while at the same time grounding and balancing one another. There are many other contrasting color schemes, such as black and white.

Now is the time to take stock of the colors in your home’s interior with this new point of view. Is there any contrasting color? If not, where can you add some? Even an all neutral room can get pepped up with the addition of a black picture frame or throw pillow.

So if you feel like your room is drowning in a sea of boredom and ho-hum, think opposites and take action before it is too late!

Solar Shades vs. Roman Shades

There are 3 main types of window treatments: curtains, blinds and shades. Shades have become a very popular choice in recent times, mainly solar shades and roman shades. In general, neither one of these types of shade is more superior to the other. But there are definitely advantages and disadvantages to each.

A solar shade is a type of roller shade. The key difference between a solar shade and a conventional roller shade is that solar shades provide light control and block harmful UV rays while at the same time preserving your view through the window. Because they decrease heat and glare from the sun, solar shades also regulate indoor air temperature which reduces need for air conditioning. However, the biggest advantage of solar shades is also their biggest disadvantage. Because solar shades allow light in during the day, they also allow light out of the window at night. This makes it very easy to see into your home if your windows face a busy street.

Roman shades are a very versatile window treatment in that they have a real feeling of stylish drapery but at the same time can give you all advantages of window shades. Roman shades are the type of window treatment that fit perfectly in every room of your house and even in your patio. They also come in a variety of styles, fabrics, colors so it is easy to match them to your home’s unique décor. The main disadvantage to roman shades is that they must be fully raised for a complete view.

As stated previously, there isn’t one of these types of shade that is better than the other. It ultimately depends on what your specific décor, light and temperature control needs are. But with this information, you have a better idea of which one would work best for you.
